What causes Pigmentation and Uneven Skintone?

A
Cloasma/Melasma
×

Normally caused by hormonal changes such as the time of the month, becoming pregnant or even just taking the contraceptive pill.

B
Freckles/Ephilides
×

A hereditary skin blemish which is only classified as pigmentation if they start to develop after the age of 12.

C
Age Spots
×

These occur later in our life and are normally caused by excessive exposure to UV rays during our earlier years. Traditionally these appear on our hands and face.

D
Post-Inflammatory Pigmentation
×

If the skin is damaged then pigmentation can start to occur after this. Unfortunately, even a minor damage can cause this from an ingrowing hair through to picking spots. This is because more light is allowed through to harm the skin.

E
Main Culprit: Sunlight
×

Whenever you are out in the sunlight your skin automatically fights off the radiation by producing a product called melanin. Should you spend too long in the sun or expose your body to too many UV rays then the cells become damaged. This unfortunately then means that the body naturally creates too much melanin which leads to pigmentation.
